Mama Kat's Writers Workshop. Today's prompt:
What do you miss most about your childhood neighborhood?
My neighborhood had anywhere from 3 to 6 kids for me to play with when I was growing up. We're talking the '70's here so you didn't sit in front of a computer to connect with your friends, you went outside and played. And you played until either you were called in for dinner or the sun went down. Those were great times. I miss our little group.
I grew up next to the freeway (glamorous!). The idea of what could be on the other side of the chain link fence that separated us from the row of decorative pine trees, that were to "hide" the freeway traffic, and possible hidden "treasures" was always on our minds. It looked like a secret place, so there must be something good there, right? A constant dare was to climb that fence and see life on the other side.
One summer, when the sun was about to go down, my friend John Scott climbed that fence. It was thrilling! First, we all thought we would be swarmed by the police and create a huge uproar with the neighborhood. Those kids are at it again! Oh, the scandal! We were as quiet as possible and cheered him on to get over the fence. His discovery did not disappoint. Bones. Bones!
After keeping this discovery to ourselves for about a week one of us told our parents and it was found out that someones cat had been missing for quite some time, hence these bones belonged to Fluffy. Well, we did solve someones mystery. You never know what you'll find on the other side of a chain link fence.
