Baby, It's Cold Outside - Now Put Some Clothes On!

My soon-to-be 12 year old thinks she's too cool to wear a coat.

It's 21 degrees outside!!!

She's wearing a short-sleeved shirt with a lightweight zip front sweatshirt. I'm warming up the car while wearing thick socks, a down coat and gloves. My youngest is sprouting her various shades of pink attire; pink down coat, pink ear muffs, pink hat, pink thick socks, and Katie shows up to the car in her sweatshirt. Is she crazy?!?

Could it be that a soon-to-be 12 year old's body temperature could be that hot? I remember not wanting to get out of bed unless my socks were waiting for me at the end of my bed and my slippers were not far behind. Cold feet = Bad mood.

I made her carry her coat into school. Of course I was given the "Mo-o-o-om" moan.

Maybe tomorrow she'll push the issue even more and wear a tank top.

Help!

  1. You are not alone. Just this morning I told my 12 yo to take off the cheerleading jacket and put on the winter coat. But she swears she is fine. Like you I had on the winter coat, shirt with thermal undershirt on and she's acting like it's 90 degrees outside. I don't remember being that warm as a kid.

  3. Our girls are so similar!! Thin top, basic hooded sweatshirt, half-zipped. All day complained how cold PE was, the classroom, lunch...it's been in the 40's this week..but she will NOT wear the brand new coat I got for her. "It's too bulky!" THEN DON'T COMPLAIN!! Jeez, it's not a bathing suit, it's a jacket, there job is to be bulky!

    TWEENS!

  4. I remember trying to push the envelope with my jacket ALL THE TIME (I tried to put off as long as possible this year too but that's because I was trying to convince myself it wasn't winter yet haha!)

Did she pick out her own jacket? Maybe she thinks it doesn't look as "cool" as her outfit or her friends' coats and so that's why she's avoiding wearing it. I hated my jackets when I was younger because they were too puffy, or too long or whatever silly reason I thought at the time.

Maybe you could make her a deal where she doesn't have to wear her coat as long as she has at LEAST four full layers on :) I'm sure she'd rather throw on her coat than look like the michelin man!

  5. Ann its totally got to be an age thing. My middle one refuses to wear a coat too... we hates long sleeves so she wears a short sleeve t, hoodie sweatshirt and I have to MAKE her bring in her coat too... meanwhile I am freezing...

  7. My son (22) came by for dinner tonight (coatless). When he was leaving he put his hoodie on and said he wished he brought his coat. I said, I didn't know you even had a winter coat. He told me he didn't, he meant his little nylon coat he wore all summer.

Even he doesn't wear a winter coat. I don't get it.

At least they wear clothes, on my way to work today there was a kid waiting for the school bus in pajama bottoms.

  8. Okay, so it hasn't gotten down to 21 yet, but it's been in the low 30s. Tara too wears only a sweatshirt. I'm lucky if I get her to wear SHOES, she's still wearing flip flops. She had on toe socks with her flip flops in the snow... I told her she needed something more substantial. We do not have proper winter footwear! Maybe it is their body temp... every thing else is askew - it's 10:52 and she is still WIDE awake!

  9. It HAS to be the age! I have to argue every day with my 11 year old who insists her sweatshirt is warm enough!

  11. She is totally nuts put her in a home - joking. I love the layers of pink on your other kid. Mine likes to mix and match some pink leopard print, some purple polka dots , a few glittery butterflies, and don't forget the clip on earrings and my brown gloves and black hat.

  13. : ) I still don't wear a coat unless I have to--and I'm 45! (I do keep one in the trunk---just in case) I am just not comfortable and I do get overheated. I say unless she is going on a long walk or sledding or something where she will be outside for an extended period of time, don't worry about it. Walking to and from the car/bus is just not a big deal. If she gets cold, she will remember to wear it next time.
