Cooking? I'm Working On It!

I've just started and I'm already behind. I'm in charge of the vegetable portion of our co-operative dinner party and my choice to contribute something creative has put my culinary skills to the test. This isn’t hard because I really don’t have many culinary skills.

I was lucky enough to find a spouse who loves to cook. Oh my goodness, it's just so wonderful! We can be at a restaurant and if the dish is worthy he will decipher the ingredients so he can re-create it in our own kitchen. Lucky me!

I, on the other hand, am very good with a take-out menu. I even go so far as to ask the servers if they will combine a bit of column A with a smidgen of column B. Perhaps they can throw in some of Column's C and D? Meg Ryan's character from "When Harry Met Sally" has nothing on me.

So here I stand, trying to prepare a dish that should be fairly simple, considering their instructions. However it seems to be taking me twice as long to do half as much. Did I miss out on the cooking gene?

I will continue on this path of gastronomic pleasure. I know I can do this. I mean, it can't really be this hard to make mashed potatoes, can it?

  4. HaHa! This is funny because my 4 year old son made the mashed potatoes tonight while tended to the other dishes! I'm hoping that he'll grow up to cook for me when I can't!

  5. Oh you're lucky to have a other half that can cook! Mine can stretch to eggs, a roast or a BBQ but as for anything fancier... well, that's why you eat out!

  6. Wait a second here. You're telling me that as a grown woman you've NEVER made mashed potatoes????? Where the hell is hubby when you need him?
It's easy-peasy. Peel, boil till fork tender, put in a your mixer bowl and mash slightly. Add a stick of butter (for a whole bag or so of potatoes), splash in some milk and start the mixer. Keep adding milk until it's a good consistency. My secret ingredient is to add sour cream. OMG, yum! Oh, and S, P, and garlic powder!!!!!!

  11. How did your mashed potatoes turn out? I wonder if there is a 'cooking gene' - I inherited it, but not from my mom (my dad always jokes about when they first got married he had to eat hot dogs and soup all the time because that's all my mom knew how to cook...LOL!) My sister, though, didn't inherit the cooking gene - she had to ask me what exactly a 'pinch' was in a recipe I gave her...(Grin!!) Hope your dinner turned out fab! ;)
