Cooking? I'm Working On It!

I've just started and I'm already behind. I'm in charge of the vegetable portion of our co-operative dinner party and my choice to contribute something creative has put my culinary skills to the test. This isn’t hard because I really don’t have many culinary skills.

I was lucky enough to find a spouse who loves to cook. Oh my goodness, it's just so wonderful! We can be at a restaurant and if the dish is worthy he will decipher the ingredients so he can re-create it in our own kitchen. Lucky me!

I, on the other hand, am very good with a take-out menu. I even go so far as to ask the servers if they will combine a bit of column A with a smidgen of column B. Perhaps they can throw in some of Column's C and D? Meg Ryan's character from "When Harry Met Sally" has nothing on me.

So here I stand, trying to prepare a dish that should be fairly simple, considering their instructions. However it seems to be taking me twice as long to do half as much. Did I miss out on the cooking gene?

I will continue on this path of gastronomic pleasure. I know I can do this. I mean, it can't really be this hard to make mashed potatoes, can it?

We have a winner for our Virtual GNO 4/3/09 party. Robin from Cinnamon & Honey is the lucky winner of a beautiful pair of earrings, her color & style choice, from Jewelry and Gifts by Rebecca. How terrific is Rebecca for offering personal choice with her jewelry creations?!! :-> Congratulations Robin!!!

The winner was chosen using Random.org. And get this, Wednesday was Robin's Birthday! Can you believe it?! Thank you Rebecca for sponsoring this giveaway.

  1. Good for you for taking on something ambitious. :)
And now, time for a laugh: I can't cook either! (Of course I can't!)

  2. Wish I could figure out the ingredients in restaurant food. . . .

  3. Good luck with your dinner. Unfortunately... I can totally relate!

Thanks for stopping by and entering my first giveaway. I'm having so much fun with it. Good luck!

    Grabbed your button too!

    See you tomorrow night.

  4. HaHa! This is funny because my 4 year old son made the mashed potatoes tonight while tended to the other dishes! I'm hoping that he'll grow up to cook for me when I can't!

  5. Oh you're lucky to have a other half that can cook! Mine can stretch to eggs, a roast or a BBQ but as for anything fancier... well, that's why you eat out!

  6. Wait a second here. You're telling me that as a grown woman you've NEVER made mashed potatoes????? Where the hell is hubby when you need him?
It's easy-peasy. Peel, boil till fork tender, put in a your mixer bowl and mash slightly. Add a stick of butter (for a whole bag or so of potatoes), splash in some milk and start the mixer. Keep adding milk until it's a good consistency. My secret ingredient is to add sour cream. OMG, yum! Oh, and S, P, and garlic powder!!!!!!

    Justine :o )

  7. I will send my 7 yr old son over... he makes the best 'mashies' of anyone I know!!

  8. Good luck cooking. Bleh! Oh lucky birthday girl winning some pretty earrings!

    Happy Friday!

  9. How did it work out??? My hubby loves to cook, but he sucks at it! LOL

  10. Are we twins? I can't cook my way out of a paper bag and my hubby loves to cook and is great at it! Congrats Robin!

  11. How did your mashed potatoes turn out? I wonder if there is a 'cooking gene' - I inherited it, but not from my mom (my dad always jokes about when they first got married he had to eat hot dogs and soup all the time because that's all my mom knew how to cook...LOL!) My sister, though, didn't inherit the cooking gene - she had to ask me what exactly a 'pinch' was in a recipe I gave her...(Grin!!) Hope your dinner turned out fab! ;)
