Miss Poodle Perm, That's Me!

Jill of Scary Mommy is doing a linky post about school pictures. You know the ones, possibly you didn't smile a sweet smile, just the smirk of panic. Or you didn't know it was picture day because you had been out sick for a week and you show up in your most comfortable shirt and bed-head. (Yep. That happened to me. The smile was good though!)

Well, my scanner isn't working or else I would post a particular picture from Freshman year. Since I don't have a visual, here's the story:

I remember my first day of High School. Actually what I remember is the picture taken of me leaving for my first day of High School. I'm wearing a brave smile, but the hair, the hair, my hair style was a nightmare.
My two best friends and I were going to be attending a High School out of our district. That was stressful enough. To add to this new-ness we wanted new looks as well. K. was going to sport the Argyle and Alligator shirt look. W. was going for 'All Monogrammed, All The Time" and I was going to have the hairstyle of my dreams.

I have straight, thick hair and had always wanted curly hair. When I would see girls with curly hair they always seemed so artistic, so worldly. I wanted to be those things too!

My mom had been perming her hair for years so she called her hair stylist. The only appointment available was the day before the first day of school. I took it. I had to have my new hair to go with my new life!
My best friends went with me. We were all excited. I had an inkling that there might be a problem when the hair stylist started running out of perm rods. However, my friends and I were so busy talking, and laughing that I didn't give it another thought.

The hair stylist took out all of the rods, put on her finishing touches of spritz and fluff, then turned me to face myself in the mirror. I was stunned. We were all stunned. The hair stylist in a good way, my friends and I, not so much. What... exactly... happened to my hair?! My hair had transformed from looking straight and long to, well, a big pile of curly poo!!! There was an upside-down triangle of curls on the top of my head.
I cried on my friends shoulders all the way home. I cried at the dinner table. I cried on the couch. I cried in bed.

I don't know how I got over myself and made it to school the next day. But I did. And I learned a valuable lesson that I can now pass on to my two girls. When wanting to make a big change, start with clothing. At least that you can return.

  1. I've had the triangle head perm too! Fortunately, mine didn't result in tears until 15 years later when I look at those pics!

  3. How funny! I permed my hair all through Jr. High and High School. I look back at the pictures and am horrified. The only good thing is...everyone else did it too! The 80's was not a pretty time for hair...

  4. Now I *really* want to see that picture. He he. I bet you still looked cute in spite of yourself.

  5. Stick straight, so I permed mine until I had babies, and now I get all the curl I can handle...

  6. Valuable lesson!!! OK, you need to fix your scanner and get that picture up- it sounds priceless!!

And you are so awesome for playing along even without the photo. :)

  8. Oh, how I wish you had the picture! I cannot remember your permed hair...

I remember my aunt (on Mom's side) perming my hair for me during my sophomore year. She didn't realize my thick hair would take the perm so well. I ended up with poodle hair. I remember my sister making fun of me at youth group... yikes. My saving grace was trying to straighten my bangs out with a curling iron and doing the whole big-Madonna/Whitney Houston bow in the hair to give it a little better look (though I doubt it was any better, really). Can't remember how long it took to grow out. Last perm was a spiral perm when I was 21 that ended up looking straggly as my hair was so long.

Thank you for the perm memories!

  9. I think I had the same hair style. Ugh.

And the day before my junior prom I let my mom try to HIGHLIGHT my hair. Um...that did not end well.

  11. I went with the hair change too but mine was for the new popular haircut called a wedge. I have thick wavy hair and learned this haircut was not for me. My ultra thick hair looked like a freaking pyramid on my head. I cried to my friends also and eventually it grew out but I learned my lesson that short hair was NOT for me.

  18. Hilarious! And we must be about the same age, because I sported the upside down triangle bangs in one of my high school yearbook pics as well!! Oh....memories!

  19. LOL! Yeah, my hubby and kids laugh at my 80's perm pictures. I hide them real quick when going through boxes to organize.

  20. I'm so sorry you didn't have a good perm experience! Though I never got a perm, I once got this hideous haircut from this horrible place.. I wanted short and layered and they gave me short and... well, short with bangs, but not COOL looking. I kinda just had to wait for it to grow out :(

  21. I had the bad perm too! When all of my friends would get perms they would wash their hair a couple of times immediately afterward. However, my parents wouldn't let me do that b/c "it would be a waste." So I was stuck w/ the crazy curly perm too!

  22. I've had some terribly aweful pictures myself. I was definitely a late bloomer.

  23. I have really damaged hair from a bad perm I got several months ago. Ive tried other products and didnt see any great results. My best friend recommended Shielo Restoration Oil - and I'm able to straighten my hair without it looking severely burned. It like seals the ends of my hair making it look healthy. I do believe this is magic in a bottle. A little goes a long way and it will last me awhile. It will fix yours too!
