Don't Tell My Kids But I Hate When School Starts

You know that back-to-school Staples commercial?  The one with the dad rejoicing in buying school supplies while his children look on in disgust all the while the tune "It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year" is playing?  I get it.  I mean, it's funny because 3 months is a chunk of time and, perhaps, your children are getting on your nerves a bit.  But for me, I'm like the kids in the commercial.  I don't like the return of school.  I hate it actually. *sniff*

Here are our high school Junior and 8th grader:

And here's our dear Benny... feeling lonely now:

It's not so much that I want time to stand still and not have my children grow up.  Well, maybe a part of me is feeling that way, but other thoughts and feelings come into play when it's the end of Summer vacation and school begins. First off, I love being able to sleep in! I think beginning a school day at 8:00 am is too early.  Is anyone really at the top of their mental game at 8:00 am? I think a 9 - 4 schedule sounds about right.

But other than hating schools early morning hours what sincerely gets to my heart and spirit is the increasing violence that is occurring in our schools. I pray every morning when I drop my kids off, that they will be safe and that, if someone is angry, that they will talk to a Counselor and leave their fellow classmates alone.  Not a day goes by where I'm not worried about our children, and by that I mean ALL of our children, when they are at school.  I'm terrified by these thoughts and have considered home-schooling but our girls say that they would miss their friends.  *sigh*  I know we can't live in a bubble, but I sure wish we could.

So here we are, another school chapter has begun.  I wish I could feel better about it.

Miss Poodle Perm, That's Me!

Jill of Scary Mommy is doing a linky post about school pictures. You know the ones, possibly you didn't smile a sweet smile, just the smirk of panic. Or you didn't know it was picture day because you had been out sick for a week and you show up in your most comfortable shirt and bed-head. (Yep. That happened to me. The smile was good though!) Well, my scanner isn't working or else I would post a particular picture from Freshman year. Since I don't have a visual, here's the story: I remember my first day of High School. Actually what I remember is the picture taken of me leaving for my first day of High School. I'm wearing a brave smile, but the hair, the hair , my hair style was a nightmare. My two best friends and I were going to be attending a High School out of our district. That was stressful enough. To add to this new-ness we wanted new looks as well. K. was going to sport the Argyle and Alligator shirt look. W. was going for 'All Monogram

My Questions Answered By Chef Pati Jinich - Video

Rob and I have been focusing on finding foods and spices that will help us take some weight off.  I've been slightly obsessed with staying on my exercise track (on week 8 now :->) and hope to get rid of this jiggly belly that has become wa-a-a-ay too comfortable on my body.  The older you get the harder it is to lose weight.  What I would say to my 40 year old self - 'See that pouch starting?  Do your crunches and planks now!  7 years from now it's going to get ugly !' I've found that spices cumin, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes and turmeric are noted to increase metabolism.  ( Yes please !)  After a good workout coconut water is more beneficial in regulating your electrolytes, and lower in calories, than sports drinks.  It also contains more potassium than other drinks which is an important component in helping to build muscle which, in turn, helps you burn more calories. And my most surprising discovery - eating avocados help burn belly fat! I&#
