Writing Prompt #5: "Share how you came up with your kids names"
When Rob and I were about to have our first child we didn't find out if it was a boy or a girl. I didn't want to know and I'm so glad he didn't either. I was fine not knowing what color clothes to get, or what shade to paint the bedroom. All of this experience was pretty wild and I was looking forward to seeing if all the Baby Shower games and tricks would be right with their predictions. (When the time came, and it was a girl, I had a feeling :->).
Rob and I had a very small list of names that sounded good to our ears and hearts. We decided we would need to see our little person and see if our choices were a good fit. It's really something - finding a name. Branding this being with a sound that will follow them their entire life. Gee, no pressure.
My side of the family has a history with the name Katherine. My great aunt, my sister,... I think I'm forgetting another one there, hmmm... However, it's a name that I love, and it's attached to people I love very much, we're big fans of Katherine Hepburn, so let's go with it!
Now for the middle name. When Rob and I lived in Connecticut, we lived on the top floor of a lovely house on a lake in Mansfield Center. Idyllic, that's how I'll always remember the house, and the woman we shared it with. Her name was Elisabeth, but everyone called her Liz. She was in her late 70's and had a fantastic life story; Friends with Pete Seeger, her ex-husband was a sculpture in Paris. She had delightful friends and cocktail parties, and when it was time to swim in the lake she would put on her special "floaty" that attached around her waist. (She called it her Jesus Belt). Liz was one of the most terrific people we have ever met in our lives and that is why we chose to share her name as our child's middle name.
The story about how Lily received her name will be for next time ;-> .
