Virtual Girls Night Out - Fireworks, Yes? or No?

Happy 4th of July weekend everyone! Any special plans for the holiday? We're in town so I'm sure we'll hang out with the neighbors and watch the kids play with sparklers (I'll be the one with a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water and prayers for safety!) How about I get my mind off of kids playing with fire and focus on our Virtual GNO!

*The VGNO blog-hop is for those who want to party "virtually" with other bloggers. Add your blog link to the link-up below, get on your fuzzy slippers, make yourself a cocktail, visit those that have left their blog link and have fun! Happy VGNO!*

Time For A Cocktail!

Stars and Stripes Martini
Ingredients:
Blueberries - slightly crushed
1.5 oz. SKYY Citrus Vodka
¼ oz. blue curacao
¼ oz. Chambord raspberry liqueur
½ oz. simple syrup
1 oz. lemonade
Splash lemon-lime soda
2 juiced lemons
Directions:
Muddle blueberries with the blue curacao in a martini glass. Place a lemon wheel slice over mixture. Pour vodka, simple syrup, a splash of lemon-lime soda, and lemon juice in a martini shaker. Shake and strain over the lemon in a martini glass. The mixture will layer. Drizzle Chambord down the side of the glass. It will layer in between the vodka and blueberry mixture creating a striped appearance; garnish will float to top.

Time For A Question!
I know that 4th of July has a lot to do with fireworks.  I love watching them.  When I was a kid I held my share of sparklers and participated in lighting fountains, twirlers and the sulfur-sodden snakes (love those!).  But now that I have children I dread the fireworks of the 4th.  I try to relax because we are being as safe as we can be, but I'm always on edge, thinking the worst.  What about you?  Do you let your children take part in lighting fireworks?  Or do you attend a big fireworks spectacle and bypass the whole situation?

Time For Some Support!

So I've entered this cookie contest you see, and I would love it if, and only if you really want to, I would love it if you would vote for my Oregon Chocolate Chunk Hazelnut Cookie at the Better Homes and Gardens State Cookie Contest on Facebook.

This is a different kind of experience for me, but I pushed through my nerves and I believe I've made a pretty darn delicious cookie!  (Give the recipe a try!)  If you feel comfortable with this, click here to vote for the Oregon Chocolate Chuck Hazelnut Cookie.  I thank you oh-so-much!

Have fun at our Virtual Girls Night Out! If you like, leave your blog link and we'll visit your blog and say, "Happy VGNO!"

Miss Poodle Perm, That's Me!

Jill of Scary Mommy is doing a linky post about school pictures. You know the ones, possibly you didn't smile a sweet smile, just the smirk of panic. Or you didn't know it was picture day because you had been out sick for a week and you show up in your most comfortable shirt and bed-head. (Yep. That happened to me. The smile was good though!) Well, my scanner isn't working or else I would post a particular picture from Freshman year. Since I don't have a visual, here's the story: I remember my first day of High School. Actually what I remember is the picture taken of me leaving for my first day of High School. I'm wearing a brave smile, but the hair, the hair , my hair style was a nightmare. My two best friends and I were going to be attending a High School out of our district. That was stressful enough. To add to this new-ness we wanted new looks as well. K. was going to sport the Argyle and Alligator shirt look. W. was going for 'All Monogram

My Questions Answered By Chef Pati Jinich - Video

Rob and I have been focusing on finding foods and spices that will help us take some weight off.  I've been slightly obsessed with staying on my exercise track (on week 8 now :->) and hope to get rid of this jiggly belly that has become wa-a-a-ay too comfortable on my body.  The older you get the harder it is to lose weight.  What I would say to my 40 year old self - 'See that pouch starting?  Do your crunches and planks now!  7 years from now it's going to get ugly !' I've found that spices cumin, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes and turmeric are noted to increase metabolism.  ( Yes please !)  After a good workout coconut water is more beneficial in regulating your electrolytes, and lower in calories, than sports drinks.  It also contains more potassium than other drinks which is an important component in helping to build muscle which, in turn, helps you burn more calories. And my most surprising discovery - eating avocados help burn belly fat! I&#
