Virtual GNO - I'm Sunscreen Barbie!

I mentioned a week ago that my 11 yr. old was starting Sex Ed. at school. We talked, we looked at books, we talked, she blushed, (I drank... just kidding... kind of) and I thought that it was under control and all was understood. But, last night, she just felt that she knew too much. She changed her mind and didn't want to grow up. I don't want her to either!!! Oh, if only we could go back. But that's just not a part of Mother Nature's plan.

You know what I need? A Virtual Girls Night Out!!!

New to the party? Welcome! The original Virtual Girls Night Out is a blog-hopping party that began in the summer of 2008. I couldn't get a sitter and I was in desperate need for time away from my children. So, I did the next best thing and turned to my blog friends.

To join the blog-hopping fun, check out my VGNO post then, due to Mr. Linky not working for me (ARGH!) leave your blog link in the comment section. Visit fellow bloggers that have left their blog links. Go blog-hopping! *Don't let Mr. Linky bring us down.* I want everyone to connect.

Time For Some Tunes!

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

I must listen to this song everyday. I just have to. In fact, I think I'll go listen to it again. Turn it up!

The weather has been oh-so-nice in my corner of the world so I've been getting my hands dirty in the garden. Guitar Guy has built two raised beds in our back yard to hold veggies and herbs.

They're great! He wants a chicken coop next. Hmmm....

Time For A Cocktail!

Oh, this drinks sounds perfect!

Citrus Lavender Martini
Ingredients
1 orange wedge
2 fresh lavender leaves, or 5-6 pieces dried lavender
1 ½ oz. vodka
½ oz. Cointreau
½ oz. sweet & sour mix
Directions
Muddle orange and lavender well in the bottom of a shaker. Add vodka, Cointreau, sweet and sour mix, and ice, and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Optional garnish – rim the glass with honey and dip the rim into raw sugar.

After a day in the garden I could definitely go for this!

Last week we had a great giveaway from Kernel Seasons. And this week I'd like to congratulate lucky winner... Debbie from Suburb Sanity! Enjoy your popcorn and all the fixings :->

Time For A Party Game!

As I look around my house I see a LOT of Barbie's. There's the Barbie in her scuba suit and the Barbie who's a Vet. These Barbie's are outside on the swing-set and in the garden too. But, these dolls don't represent the way I think they should. If I were a Barbie I would be "Sunscreen Barbie". Follow the chart below to see which Barbie you would be.

"Modern Barbie"
Use the chart to find which Barbie you are. Use the letter of your first name.

A - D = Sunscreen Barbie
E - H = Lactose Intolerate Barbie
I - L = Migraine Barbie
M - P = Blogger Barbie
Q - T = Mini Van Barbie
U - Z = Bi-Polar Barbie

Now, which Barbie are you? If you need to tweak this a bit, have fun!

OK now, go have fun! Since Mr. Linky is being an incredible drag please leave your blog link in the comments section below to join the Virtual GNO. Visit those that sign-in. Go blog-hopping! That's what it's all about. Share this party with your blog friends, post A LINK to the Virtual GNO on your blog and have them join us. Send our party into Twitter world. (#VGNO) Leave your Twitter ID in the comments section. The more the merrier! I want everyone to connect. That's what it's all about.

Fake Or Real. Really?

I can't believe what I'm seeing. Is this really real?

I was watching "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" (don't judge) this afternoon. When that show was over the next one began. I'm still waiting for the punchline. Here I was, being welcomed by the host to "Fake or Real: The ultimate plastic surgery game show". Huh?

Our host informed us that three women would be coming on stage, each trying to convince the "celebrity judges" that they've had plastic surgery when, in fact, only one has. If the judges claim that someone looks "Fake" when they are actually "Real" then that woman wins the prize of... wait for it... $1,000.

yeah.

I kept waiting for the laugh track. Something to tell me that this was not only a joke to me, but to those participating.

I just about lost it when I saw the "celebrity judges". Now, I'm not making this up, the first judge was from MadTV, Debra Skelton. I do think she's funny but, um, well... anyway. The second "celebrity judge" was, and I am NOT making this up, brief-case carrier number 11 from "Deal or No Deal". WHAT?!? The third "celebrity judge" made a lot more sense, it was the delightful pink tie wearing plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Rey from E's own "Dr. 90210".

Yet, still no laugh track, and everyone seemed to be taking this seriously.

I had to draw the line when I saw the first contestant. She came bouncing down the little staircase as hard as she could. It made my back hurt.

What's going on here?!? Are these people serious? If this is something that continues to air on the E! Network I have some words to say to my TV boyfriend, The Soup's Joel McHale... 'Run! Run Like The Wind!'

Virtual GNO - 3-Day Weekend and A Giveaway!

Am I the only one still in town for the 3-Day weekend? I feel like it.

Yesterday I was a chaperone for my youngest's field trip to a working farm. It was a beautiful day and the opportunity to spend the day in the sun was fantastic. (I live in Oregon... 'nuff said) 2nd graders have crazy energy and incredible minds which lead many of the parents to ask "Is there a bar in the barn by chance?"

You know what I'm in the mood for? A Virtual Girls Night Out!

New to the party? Welcome! The original Virtual Girls Night Out is a blog-hopping party that began in the summer of 2008. I couldn't get a sitter and I was in desperate need for time away from my children. So, I did the next best thing and turned to my blog friends.

Time For Some Tunes!

Carolina Liar "Show Me What I'm Looking For"

My latest daily listen. Love it!!! But where is the rest of the band? Chad Wolf is adorable but hey, have you seen these guys?!? (Not that their level of hotness decides weather I like their music or not but it doesn't hurt ;-> )

Time For A Cocktail!

Carolina Iced Tea
Ingredients
1 1/2 oz Southern Comfort®
1 oz Captain Morgan® Original spiced rum
1 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz vodka
5 oz sweet iced tea

Directions
Add alcohol and stir lightly. Pour in iced tea. Stir a few more times and serve.
Note: Add a splash of lemon and garnish with a twist for a classy drink or serve in a mason jar for a real down-home feel.

Goodness gracious! No wonder things seem to move slower in the South. They've got some kick-ass Iced Tea ;->

Time To Share!

While checking in with friends about their weekend plans I was finding that we seem to be the only family staying in town for the 3-Day weekend. So, what are your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Anything special?

You Need This! Buy Now!

I’m inspired by a new show on the Discovery Channel called “Pitchmen”. It follows Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan as they search for the next great invention. Well, I’ve got a few inventions that I would like to see become a reality.

For Your Consideration:

Comforter Weights: These handy-dandy gadgets will clip easily onto the comforter corners on your side of the bed so your sleeping partner has no chance of hogging the covers.

Applause Alarm Clock: A positive way to start the day after a comfy night's sleep with all of your covers. This Applause Alarm Clock will rouse you from your slumber with enthusiastic applause to start you off on a cheery note.

Toilet Paper Roll Direction Correction: We all know there is only one true way for the toilet paper to hang on the dispenser. This little gadget will guide those, who so graciously decide to add a new roll of toilet paper, to put it on the one-and-only way.

There you have it. Gadgets that will have us asking ourselves "How did I ever live without it?" I'm ready for Mr. Mays and Mr. Sulllivan to contact me. Call now!

Think Of What He's Seen?!?

Keeping my neighbor busy while her husband prepared her surprise party was not hard. Our neighborhood was holding its annual parade and carnival so as we returned to her house after our fill of local crafts and waffle cones, the added cars surrounding her house wasn’t unusual. How do you hide a group of 75 people? Plan the party the same day as a neighborhood celebration!

After going home to change I walked in the door to a party going full steam. It was a wonderful turn out. I met her sisters from out of town and her old college roommate. I had heard so much about these people I felt as if I knew them already.

I had excused myself to refresh my drink and, upon returning, I saw the back of a head that looked strangely familiar. My neighbor said “Oh Ann! I believe you know my brother-in-law?” This tall man turned around with the biggest grin and said “Well, hello Ann! How are you?”

Oh-my-gosh!

It was my OB-Gyn! What the?!?

I stood there shaking his hand like a fool. His wife said “Oh, are you one of his patients, too? Nice to meet you.” Um, yeah. Nice to meet you, too. I felt so awkward. I wasn’t prepared! I didn’t have an appointment!

I did my best to make pleasant conversation and prayed that my inner-filter was at the top of its game. (No Ann, don’t mention your last check-up. No Ann, don’t think about what he’s seen. And please Ann, get yourself under control and stop sweating!) I complimented him on his sporty looking shirt and said it looked much better than his scrubs. Lame.

I just couldn’t handle the pressure anymore and excused myself to get a very large refill. As I passed my neighbor she couldn’t help but laugh. Hey… just whose “surprise” party was this supposed to be anyway?

Virtual GNO - Sweet!

Is it really Friday? The week actually went quickly for me. I almost missed an important appointment yesterday because I've been a day off this week. Maybe due to the fact that I was a bit fixated on my 11 yr. old's Sex Ed. class that began this week. We're growing up in this house!!! Know what I need? A Virtual Girls Night Out!

New to the party? Welcome! The original Virtual Girls Night Out (boys welcome too) is a blog-hopping party that began in the summer of 2008. I couldn't get a sitter and I was in desperate need for time away from my children. So, I did the next best thing and turned to my blog friends. This is how we do it. Check out my VGNO post then sign the Mr. Linky guestbook below. Visit fellow bloggers that have signed in as well. Go blog-hopping!

So about that very important appointment I almost missed yesterday... it was time to color those grey roots!

What the heck happened to my eyebrow?! Where'd the rest of it go???

I am so bad about doing things for myself that it took the hairstylists wife to call me and tell me the day I was getting my hair done. She even called the night before to make sure I wouldn't forget! Now that's service (and it helps that she is a fellow mom who has the same trait).

Let's Get This Hair On The Dance Floor!

Anjulie "Boom"

You might not be able to get that little "Boom - Sha - Laka" out of your head today. Sorry about that. 'Boom - Sha - Laka' Oops! There I go!

Time For A Cocktail!

Since I covered the grey I thought a little Grey Goose vodka was in order. And a bit of chocolate doesn't hurt either!

Chocolate Candy
Ingredients
1 oz Godiva® chocolate liqueur
1 oz vanilla schnapps
1 oz creme de cacao
1 oz Grey Goose® vodka
1 splash half-and-half

Directions
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Stir, pour into a chilled cocktail glass, and serve.

And speaking of chocolate have you signed up to receive your free chocolate from the Mars Company yet? No? Go to this link for your chance at the Mars Real Chocolate Relief Act. https://secure.realchocolate.com/

Last weeks VGNO had a fantastic giveaway sponsored by the hilarious company Knock Knock. Our party's lucky winner is....

Susan from "Stay At Home Mom"! Congratulations Susan! I hope you enjoy your Happy Mom Bundle.

Time For A Party Game!

Sweet As Candy

If you were to have a candy bar named after you what would it be called? Just for fun follow the guide below to create your candy bar name. Ex. If your first name starts with an 'A' and your last name starts with an 'H' your candy bar would be called "Sweet Confection". Try it out.

Your First Name
A - C = Sweet
D - F = Honey
G - I = Lucious
J - L = Sugar
M - O = Precious
P - R = Savory
S - U = Delightful
V - Z = Heavenly

Your Last Name
A - C = BonBon
D - F = Tart
G - I = Confection
J - L = Chunk
M - O = Honey
P - R = Blossom
S - U = Bits
V - Z = Buns

Let us know what your candy bar name is. (What it's filled with is completely up to you :-> )

OK now, go have fun! Sign Mr. Linky's guestbook below to join the Virtual GNO. Visit those that sign-in. Go blog-hopping! That's what it's all about. Phase One - Sex Ed.

Preparing for the first class of Sex Ed. went pretty well. The problem is, my daughter just isn't interested in "What's that for? Why does this happen?" It's more like "My friend said this and it's just gross!!!"

While my oldest daughter and I were having our serious phase one of the Sex Ed. conversation in our garden her little sister, who is 8, was sneeking up to the windows and slowly opening them, thinking we couldn't hear the metal sliding against each other.

During the explanation about the man/woman connection I heard a giggle from the open window. That sent my oldest screaming, "Lily! Leave us alone!"

Phase one of the Sex Ed. conversation was over and my youngest came outside and said "I want to know everything you just told Katie". I said, 'Well, we were talking about sexual intercourse.' She screamed "YUCK! NO!" and took the book that I had been using as a guide and leafed through the pages. "Here" she said. "I want to talk about "Healthy Choices - The Food Pyramid".

That, my dear, will be a piece of cake.

No Turning Back - Sex Ed.

Tomorrow is the day. I remember Sex Education in 7th grade when I was growing up. Now, for my oldest, the class begins in 5th grade. *heavy sigh*

Of course I've been talking with her about the body and how it works for years. I was brought up with a mother that was fantastic about being available for any and all questions. It was really up to me and my comfort level.

Now, after reading the letter that came home from school, tomorrow is the day that the 5th grade class begins their F.L.A.S.H. program, "Family Life and Sexual Health". For me there was no fancy program, it was just Sex Ed. That was it. Let the giggling commence!

I want to go back to preschool!!! I want to be Parent Helper #1 and bring the juice! (Or was it 'Crackers'? I could never remember what I was supposed to bring so I just brought one of everything).

I talked with my daughter about the class last night and she asked "Are they going to talk about private parts?" 'Yep', I said, "They're going to talk about all the private parts." "I bet I'm going to hear some great jokes at recess then!" Oh Honey, I bet you are.

Oh, well... time to grow up.

Virtual GNO - Working At The Mom Thing - And A Giveaway!

ARGH!

Mother's Day is Sunday and this morning I growled at my daughter. (You know, that deep throat grumble that's one step away from all out screaming). Well... I guess no "Mother Of The Year" awards are coming my way.

5th Grade Talent Show

A story for my 5th grade daughter:

Picture this, I'm in 5th grade and it's time for the school's Annual Talent Show. My best friend Wendy and I had worked out this great (;-> ) dance routine to one of our favorite Captain and Tennile songs. Wendy and I practiced on weekends and after school until it was dark. Our bodies were different sizes and we desperately wanted to look coordinated. We were devoted.

I was a full foot taller than Wendy, actually I was a full foot taller than everyone in my class. It had been that way for a few years and I was doing my best to deal with it. But there were times when I would walk with my shoulders slumped just to appear shorter, in my own mind anyway. However, my mother, and my friends, wouldn't let me get away with it and would poke me in-between my shoulder blades to straighten up. (I thank them to this day for doing that!)

Not only was I taller than the others in my class my body seemed to be, well, developing faster than the other girls. I just didn't want to deal with it though, so I ignored it.

Comes the night of the big Talent Show and Wendy and I are ready. We have our hair perfectly feathered, our lips have on 5 layers of Bonnie Bell Lip Gloss, and we're wearing T-shirts with the name of our duo "Paradise" (in rainbow letters!) we had printed just for the occasion.

When we hit that stage we loved every second of it! We were groovin' and movin'. We were jumping and sliding. American Bandstand here we come! The applause sounded like a dream and we smiled and hugged each other as we ran off stage.

Our mothers were there to greet us with hugs and cheers. My mother took me aside. As she held me tight in her arms, she whispered in my ear "Honey, tomorrow we're going shopping for a training bra."

Oh. That's why those boys were smiling.

Thanks Kid

The thought of wearing a bathing suit is something I've never been comfortable with. And it has nothing to do with the size of my thighs or the width of my hips or the range of my rack. All my life I've dealt with something that has made me very self conscious. And the only thing that took me away from my self-absorption was becoming a mother.

I was born with a birthmark on my back. When bathing suit season came around I made sure my swimsuit was a certain style so my birthmark wouldn't show. All my friends had a "two-piece" while I was the one in the body covering "one-piece". I lived my life thinking that if people knew of this "thing" I have on my back that they wouldn't... oh, I don't know, wouldn't like me anymore. Stupid, I know. But self-absorption does that to you.

When my purpose in this world became more about someone else's well-being and less about whatever unique feature I had, it was freeing. When you're a mom you don't have time to be self aware. I think back on all the wasted time fretting at poolside, thinking 'Everyones looking at me!' instead of enjoying myself. (And by "poolside" I mean my life.) So much wasted time spent on worrying.

My children have given me a wonderful gift. I have no time for self-obsession. I'm very grateful.

Virtual GNO - May Day Fun!

Guitar Guy and I are getting the house ready for our annual May Day gathering. Our house is small but our yard makes up for our tiny rooms. (Cross fingers that the rain holds off, at least for Saturday please Mother Nature!) I need a break from the party prep. Time for a Virtual Girls Night Out!

New to the party? The original Virtual Girls Night Out (boys welcome too) is a blog-hopping party. You are where the party begins! Check out my VGNO post then sign the Mr. Linky guestbook below. Visit fellow bloggers that have signed in as well. Now, go put on something cozy and settle in for the party. Add your blog link to Mr. Linky below and join in the blog-hopping fun!

Time To Twirl!

Missy Higgins "Steer"

I want to hang out in a field and play guitar too! (I should probably learn how to play first. Oh well ;-> )

The Kentucky Derby is Saturday. We make sure to have a delightful blend of the classic Derby drink, Mint Julep, on hand for our friends. Have you ever had a Mint Julep? Yowzaa!

Time For A Cocktail!

Mint Julep
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Kentucky Whisky

Directions:
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of "Early Times" Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

After a couple of sips you'll be saying "Horse race? What horse race?!"

Time To Share & Win!

Have you ever brought something to a Pot Luck only to see that no one was eating it? Man! I tried this recipe for, what was supposed to be, a great cranberry relish with fresh orange rind and some other sweet, cool stuff. It was supposed to go with the Host's main dish of Chicken. Well, let's just say my bowl of red goo just sat on the table. My husband was a trooper and had a few spoonfuls to make me feel better. Yes, I taste-tested it before we left. I thought it was good. Whatever.

What about you? Have you been the one that brought the dish that nobody ate? Please share! I will have my May Day guests read your posts and we will select winners. The winners will receive packets of flower seeds to help celebrate this May Day.

OK now, go have fun! Sign Mr. Linky's guestbook below to join the Virtual GNO. Visit those that sign-in. Go blog-hopping! That's what it's all about. Share this party with your blog friends, post A LINK to the Virtual GNO on your blog and have them join us. Send our party into Twitter world. (#VGNO) The more the merrier! That's what it's all about.
