The Pool Can Be So Cruel

I've been trying to get myself into better shape. I don't want my girls to think that it's all about being "skinny", so I tell them 'I'm working to become stronger'. But losing weight is part of my goal, of course.

On our families recent trip (see Altitude Adjustment) I quickly noticed that we were in a different place. A place where cars use a LOT of gasoline, a place where having a Housekeeper is a given, a place where a monthly trip for a "touch-up" is probably not unheard of. (Not that I'm against any of these things - except the cars- it's just... it's not my norm.)

Nowhere did I feel more out of place than at the pool. I was seeing women with children, but I was finding it hard to believe that these woman carried anything other than a tennis racket or a Birkin Bag. Hmmm... "That's OK Ann', I kept telling myself 'You look just fine. You're stronger than you were 5 months ago. Keep going.'

While coyly glancing around trying to find a body shape that some what resembled mine, I finally found her. Over by the wading pool, splashing with her children with her back to me, there she was in a dark blue swimsuit. Ah, a REAL woman's shape. A booty, some thighs. Yeah! We could start our own little club!

I started to feel a bit at ease after noticing my "Body Buddy". I removed my swimsuit cover-up and lounged on a chaise, basking in the sun. While slathering on the SPF 80 that's when my new best friend dashed my spirit. She turned profile to reveal she was pregnant. At least 7 months.

Oh well, I'm stronger than I was 5 months ago, I'm stronger than I was 5 months ago... have I convinced myself yet?

  1. Nobody is perfect, even if they look that way on the outside. I love that you tell your girls you are "Getting stronger", because inevitably, as you get stronger, you will get a bit skinnier. That's really what I'm working towards myself.

  3. Girl, I don't think I've ever seen a full shot of you, but I can tell just by your headshot that I would KILL to have your body. I'm fat. REAL fat, so even 180 pounds or so sounds thin to me. And I'm sure you're way below that weight!

  4. Haha! Had a similar experience at the beach. Saw this woman from the back and noticed that for such a tiny woman, she had little love handles. Made me feel better. But as I turned to go in the ocean, I glanced back to see her profile and couldn't believe she was 9 months pregnant or beyond!! My husband called me a creep b/c I was staring at her for a good long minute in disbelief. When I was pregnant, you knew. NO matter what angle you were looking from.

  5. I used to think that those women either were genetically blessed or spent all their time at the gym. But the truth is, we have no idea if they had a little nip here and tuck there. (Or a BIG one!) If they are well-to-do enough to carry a Birkin bag, what's a trip to the plastic surgeon's office and two week's bed rest thanks to the housekeeper? Right?
Your mantra sounds so much healthier to me!

  6. You are stronger. Think about this too--you are probably mentally stronger than many of those women too. Money does not equal brains...that's one thing money can't buy. Many of those women can probably afford personal trainers and liposuction, botox, etc. Your self-image will be much better in the long run. Keep on keepin' on Ann!

  7. I hate dealing with the pool so this year instead of spending money on yet another swimsuit I bought some adorable cover-ups, swim shorts, and great pool shoes (with a heel so I look taller)! I may have been over dressed but I was also best-dressed. : )

  9. Enjoying the trip to the destination is part of the trip. You're stronger then you were 5months ago before the trip started.

  10. It sounds like the worst possible place to compare yourself to other women. Those moms are not normal I tell you!

  11. I figured if Valerie Bertonelli could do it so could I. I just did it without Jenny Craig. It's not easy and it's a lifestyle change not diet, not an exercise routine it is a lifestyle. Those women probably have a plastic surgeon on retainer, a personal trainer and all the time in the world to work on themselves. YOU on the other hand are working on yourself for the right reason. To get healthier

  12. It's funny how your body image changes depending on your environment. In Boulder I feel slumpy. In the midwest, aerobics instructor.

  13. oh no.
I am sure that all those "other" ladies that you thought looked good were having the same insecure feelings you were...

and i misread this one sentence and about spit out my drink laughing. "We could start our own little club!" I read club as chub....and giggled and then felt guilty for giggling when I reread it properly.

  16. And that's why I don't swim ... who needs all that pressure! I'll just sit by the pool in my shorts & tank swimsuit and have the cabana boy bring me my drinks thank you very much!

  17. oh my goodness what a blow to the ego. Oh well LOL we are women and our ego's don't need to be huge anyways. You are getting stronger and healthier. You'll live longer because it of. You might even get to see great great grandchildren :)

  18. Ok Ann.....first of all you're a beautiful lady and judging by your profile picture I would say you have an awesome body. Anyway, we could all use a little toning in one way or another. Your just using your effort to do it and not the effort of a doctor!

Good luck with getting into the body that you feel comfortable in! I need to start toning up as well. Someday.................
