Keeping my neighbor busy while her husband prepared her surprise party was not hard. Our neighborhood was holding its annual parade and carnival so as we returned to her house after our fill of local crafts and waffle cones, the added cars surrounding her house wasn’t unusual. How do you hide a group of 75 people? Plan the party the same day as a neighborhood celebration!
After going home to change I walked in the door to a party going full steam. It was a wonderful turn out. I met her sisters from out of town and her old college roommate. I had heard so much about these people I felt as if I knew them already.
I had excused myself to refresh my drink and, upon returning, I saw the back of a head that looked strangely familiar. My neighbor said “Oh Ann! I believe you know my brother-in-law?” This tall man turned around with the biggest grin and said “Well, hello Ann! How are you?”
Oh-my-gosh!
It was my OB-Gyn! What the?!?
I stood there shaking his hand like a fool. His wife said “Oh, are you one of his patients, too? Nice to meet you.” Um, yeah. Nice to meet you, too. I felt so awkward. I wasn’t prepared! I didn’t have an appointment!
I did my best to make pleasant conversation and prayed that my inner-filter was at the top of its game. (No Ann, don’t mention your last check-up. No Ann, don’t think about what he’s seen. And please Ann, get yourself under control and stop sweating!) I complimented him on his sporty looking shirt and said it looked much better than his scrubs. Lame.
I just couldn’t handle the pressure anymore and excused myself to get a very large refill. As I passed my neighbor she couldn’t help but laugh. Hey… just whose “surprise” party was this supposed to be anyway?
